background personal, behavioral, psychological, social and psychological factors disorders can influence the outbreak of psychological disorders. the study aimed to examine the prevalence and severity of depression and relationship with self-efficacy in diabetic patients of fereydan and chadegan cities. methods: the research was a descriptive-analytic and cross-sectional, which studies 403 patients in two cities with the use of systematic random sampling observing input and output criteria. data collection method was a questionnaire comprising of two sections with 9 questions about demographic information, the standard 21-items beck test on depression and 6 self efficacy questions. data analysis was conducted through independent t-tests, chi-square, mann-whitney, spearman and kruskal-wallis test using spss – 18 in the significant level of 0.05. findings: 160 (39.7 %) of samples were reported without depression, 109 (27%) persons with mild depression, 94 (23.3%) and 40 (9.9%) people with moderate and severe depression respectivly. prevalence of depression was higher among females than males (p = 0.2). there was a significant relation between prevalence and severity of depression and higher age, residential location, lower education level, the duration of diabetes, low self efficacy and incident of complications and infection of other chronic diseases (p<0.05). conclusion: it seems that socio-cultural and behavioral variables and public access to services have an important influence on reducing the severity of depression among these patients. therefore, the issue of equity in healthcare must be seriously and precisely taken into accounts.
